PERFORMANCE : SOMA RASA W/ THE RESIN DOGS, SHIN KI ROW
DATE : 6 APRIL 2001
VENUE: THE ARENA (BRISBANE,QLD)

Soma Rasa might reject having their broken beats labelled junglism but their adherence to the ultra modern dance floor aesthetic is undeniable. They coerce tempos ever closer to breaking point from start to finish, never letting the bass settle as it squirts and flips through a run of metallic variations.

The party has kicked off early and as we arrive Soma Rasa are playing to a large crowd, nicely warmed up by Shin Ki Row. It's still big, live breakbeats to the fore with these guys, but it's getting more interesting as DJ Kristian's input - particularly his tuneful scratching - becomes more integral to the songs, rather than embellishment. Tasty new offerings feature additional rhythms and well placed electronic bleeps, pushing the breaks into the background and making them bigger and better when they kick back in.
