It's pretty impressive when a band manages to fill a venue let alone a local band. Resin Dogs managed it with their cd launch a few weeks ago, and Soma Rasa managed it the other night with their CD launch. For a band that has been playing gigs for less than a year that's not too shabby. And the fact that the CD's going to be out in a week or so is just the icing on the cake
.
On came Soma Rasa, and they went into it hard, The drums were crisp and sharp, with the noise reverberating through the Zoo and filling it with the beat. Bill's collection of synths and workstations apppears to have increased since I last saw the band, with three pieces forming a console for him to play from. The noises coming out of that corner were pretty amazing, with a particular bent for long phat sounds with the resonance sweeping up and down through the music. Over this was some rather intricate scratching from Shannon, giving the music character and accenting the beat.
The boys played most of the material of the new CD, and it all sounded excellent. Particular mention should be made of the version of Dirty that they played, which featured a driving trance bass drum that broke into large chunky breaks and was amazing. The whole show was excellent, and complimented by the very accomplished and thought-provoking visuals that were projected behind the band while playing. It was all summed up rather well by a rather verbose guy in the men's toilet.
"Fuck man, can that boy pay his drums. He just bangs those things like there's no tomorrow, and it all sounds so fucking good".
