Pleasant propositions

RECORD deals, German tours, porn stars – it's all happening for Soma Rasa. Yeah, that caught your attention didn't it?

The Brisbane band recently returned from the MUSEXPO industry showcase in Los Angeles where they received two propositions – one a longed-for European development deal and the other a rather unexpected invitation to perform (musically speaking) at the adult entertainment industry's AVN Awards in Las Vegas next year.

"It's like the Grammys of adult entertainment," Soma Rasa's Dan Hazard chuckles. Although it's all "in early development", the band have tentatively been offered a slot opening the awards night alongside frequent collaborators, US outfit Digital Underground.

But realistically, the gig is just a bonus, compared with the real golden carrot the guys landed at the expo – a development deal with European label Brainstorm, which covers Germany, Austria and Switzerland (no Hasselhoff jokes please).

It's the sort of deal they've found impossible to snare in Australia, where electronica is still very much the realm of stubborn independent warriors.

"We set up our own record label (in Australia) and released everything in-house rather than even go looking for a big record deal because there just really isn't that much opportunity with labels here," Hazard says.

And the irony of their roundabout journey – travelling to America from Australia to hook a European deal – is not lost on them. But it is exactly the target market they were aiming for, given Germany's rich history of nurturing electronic pioneers such as Kraftwerk.

"We've always had a bit of an affinity with that (German) sound," Hazard says, adding that the band actually took part of their name from an album by experimental electronica group Einstadiürzende Neubauten.

The new deal means that Soma Rasa will launch their new album overseas before it's released at home, touring Germany, Austria and Switzerland in September and the UK in October.

And from here on in, they better start brushing up on their German.

"I think it will definitely be a twice annual event," Hazard says of the overseas tours.
